Birthday Contest!

When I was a kid, I thought it kind of sucked having a summer birthday because it meant I couldn't bring cupcakes in to class to celebrate with all of my friends the way everyone else did (because somehow, out of 115 people in my graduating class, there were only a handful of us with birthdays from June through August). But as I've gotten older, I've liked my birthday better and better. For starters, it occurred to me around third or fourth grade that my birthday was exactly six months away from Christmas, making the distribution of presents through the year more equitable (unlike the poor kids with December or January birthdays, who often got their birthdays rolled into other holidays, or mostly left off in the post-holiday slump).

I don't know about you, but I love presents! Since today is my birthday, I thought I would give all of you lovely people on the internet a chance to get one.

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post by 11:59 PM June 30th (EST) telling me what your favorite birthday memory is. It can be your birthday, or someone else's that you helped make special. Don't forget to leave your name and a way for me to contact you, either through email, Twitter, or a blog.

On July first, I'll draw two winners using a random number generator. First place with get a free PDF download of my pattern, "Charlotte" and some lovely yarn to knit it out of:

Cascade Yarns Luna Paints in Color #9701
100% Peruvian Cotton, 100g

Second place will get the free pattern.

Winners will have until the end of July to redeem the coupon code on Ravelry (if you're not on Ravelry, just let me know and I can email you a copy).

(All of my photos of "Charlotte" are on the laptop, which I still don't have back yet. A preview shot can be found here, however.)

  1. Happy Birthday!!!

A good birthday memory I have is last year when I knit my friend an "Azzu" shawlette and she said it was the best present she ever got. I felt really good about that.

  3. When I think of most memorable birthday I think of the one that I got to plan - it was my sister's 5th birthday. I ran the games for the kids and my mother made a ladybug cake using paste food coloring. Lots of happy kids with red/black faces that day :)

  4. Happy, happy birthday! Have a great celebration day surrounded by the one that loves you (wasting special time with people not so special is a big mistake in my book).
I was born on Christmas Day and nobody was around to celebrate it when I was at school.
Then, some years ago, my husband took me to New York and to Broadway for a marvellous week to see the Phantom of the Opera, to enjoy the Momix show and all the museums. Of course I went shopping for yarn.
    Have a great time!

  5. Happy Birthday!!!

My favorite memory is on my brother's birthday, we were at Disney in Florida and my mom and I did some shopping by ourselves, when we got back to the hotel room I surprised my brother by giving him a stuffed dog from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (you know the one that holds the keys in the ride) he'd been wanting it every time we went in but he was saving his money for SeaWorld. The look on his face was priceless when he saw it :)

  6. Happy Birthday!!

My favorite birthday memory is from my mom's 65th birthday this year. I gave her a stack of memory letters that all of her friends and family wrote to her. It was amazing!

  7. Happy Birthday! 115 kids, and all but a few bringing cupcakes for everyone? Can we fire up the WayBack machine so I can go to school with you? I also have a summer birthday, but I loved it because it usually meant we'd go to the circus or a county fair or theme park or the beach boardwalk or ... well the list of summery fun goes on and on! More recently, Mom just celebrated her 87th birthday. Just a quiet lunch out followed by a some shopping, but I'm thankkful that she's still getting around well and sharp as a tack.

  8. Happy Birthday! I wouldn't know what to do with the yarn or how to follow a pattern. Trust me, a June birthday is lots better than a cold dark February one. Mine's close enough to St. Valentine's day tht for years in adolescence I would hope that early birthday cards ( you can always tell a card from the envelope) might just have been a Valentine from a secret admirer. Imagine the torment this could visit on the soul of a pubescent boy without a gilfriend. But hey, I survived! Best wishes.

  9. My most favorite birthday was when my eldest sister asked me to babysit for her daughter and I was feeling all sorry for myself that no body had remembered to wish me a happy birthday -- not even my Mom and Dad. I went off to her home to babysit for her and a rolling shout of "surprise" came over me as I entered their home. My parents and sister and brother-in-law had 'secretly' invited all my friends to a surprise birthday party for me. It was really a blast.

Thank you for your awesome giveaway and I hope you have a delightfully happy birthday.

  10. I used to have big parties for my birthday when I was a kid, which meant I didn't get a gift because we had to choose one o the other. It wouldn't compare to what kids get today but they were special at the time and I love spending my birthdays with all my friends.

  16. A Very Happy Birthday!

Sorry I am late. Birthday memories? I am too old and senile to remember. Not really, I have several: each time one of my children were born. Other than that every one of my daughters birthdays. I do not know if it is because only one daughter or because she is my daughter.

  19. Happy birthday to a fellow June baby. My birthday was on the 19th. I completely understand your complaints about not being able to celebrate. Most of the kids had already gone to their cottages.
My favorite memory is the time that I was having a party, and my friends were coming soon. My mother was sitting around the pool having a drink with a friend. She completely forgot. So I had to scramble to find something to feed everyone. Their were hotdogs in the freezer and no cake. Oops. We'll never foeget that birthday.

  20. Happy birthday!
My favorite birthday memory is from a few years ago. My classmates took me to a little redneck bar where we swing danced to a live band. I was wearing my tiara (I started a tradition when I turned 25 that I would wear a tiara on my birthday and I do it every year) and the band was taking a break. They asked me about the tiara and I told them it was my birthday. They sang to me - "Happy Birthday" and "Felis Cumpleanos" (which is "Happy Birthday" in Spanish - I live in Texas). It was surreal, but a memory I'll never forget. And it was the first time anyone sang to me in Spanish. :)

  22. Happy birthday! My favorite birthday memory is the year my husband took me to a spa for a whole weekend. Our son was about a year old and DH arranged for my parents to come and stay with him while we were pampered at the spa. Lovely!
