Introduction to
Illusion Knitting
Length: 2 hours
Short Description: How
to work a basic illusion pattern.
Supplies Provided: Pattern
Supplies Needed: Two
colors of yarn in the same weight (preferably worsted to aran) and appropriate
needles.
Summary: Students
will learn the basics of illusion knitting, including basic chart and pattern
reading. The pattern provided is for a neck wrap. Students should be able to
complete 25-50% of the pattern during the class, and have the skills to
complete it on their own by the end.
Illusion Knitting Part
II: Creating Your Own Patterns
Length: 2 hours
Short Description: How
to use basic computer programs (Excel or Numbers), graph paper or knitter’s
graph paper to chart out your own illusion pattern
Supplies Provided:
Sketch paper, graph paper, tracing paper, pencils/pens in several colors.
Laptop for demonstration purposes only.
Supplies Needed: Two
colors of yarn in the same weight (preferably worsted to aran) and appropriate
needles for swatching, a design idea, preferably in the form of a black and
white photo or sketch (not greyscale). If desired, students may bring a laptop
or tablet to follow along with the computer demonstration, but it is not
mandatory.
Summary: This
class teaches students how to take the image in their head and translate it
into an illusion chart. Since this is an introductory class, it focuses mainly
on text and simple images. By the end of the class, students should have a
completed chart and associated swatches, everything they need to get them
started on creating their own illusion projects.
Knitting Hacks Part I:
Knitting without turning
Length: 2 hours
Short Description: An
introduction to knitting and purling without turning your work.
Supplies Provided: N/A
Supplies Needed: Yarn
and appropriate needles (preferably worsted to aran weight). Optional: stitch
markers
Summary: Part one
in a series, this class is a highly recommended starting point for anyone who
plans to take the Introduction to Illusion course. It is mandatory for anyone
taking Part II in this series.
This class covers knitting back backwards, or how to knit without turning. It teaches students how to read their knitting, and some practical applications of this technique as used in design work, entrelac, and short row patterns. At the end of the class, students will have a series of practice swatches utilizing the various skills learned.
Knitting Hacks Part
II: Dropping Down
Length: 3 hours
Short Description: How to correct problems in your knitting
on previous rows without ripping back.
Supplies Provided: Homework
pattern.
Supplies Needed: Students
should bring their homework swatch and a pair of DPNs one size smaller than the
swatch was created on. More information
on supplies (yarn and needles) can be found on the homework pattern.
Summary: Everyone
makes mistakes. This class is designed to show how to correct errors in
knitting several rows after they’ve occurred, and covers knit and purl
patterns, cables, slipped stitches, yarn overs, and decreases. The first half
of the class covers errors that happen in the middle of the row, while the
second half of the class covers errors at the end of a row. Part I in this
series is mandatory before taking Part II.
Knitting Hacks Part
II: Embellishing
Length: 2 hours
Short Description: For knitting with a color in each hand in
two color patterns, cabling without a cable needle.
Supplies Provided: N/A
Supplies Needed: Two
colors of yarn in the same weight and appropriate needles
Summary: Students
will learn tricks to make different techniques easier, including how to knit
with two colors on the same row without tangling their yarn, and how to cable
without a cable needle.
